Overview

Join the Linux Systems Group within Microsoft’s Core Operating Systems organization, a team powering Azure Cloud through cutting-edge Linux operating systems and virtualization technologies.

Microsoft is looking for a Senior Software Engineer with deep design and programming expertise to develop, debug, and maintain system-level software for Linux-based platforms. This is an opportunity to make a global impact while contributing to Azure Cloud infrastructure growth.


Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define user and product requirements.
  • Design, implement, and optimize high-performance system-level software.
  • Drive dependency analysis and technical documentation.
  • Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) to monitor and resolve infrastructure issues.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Contribute to Open Source Software (OSS) projects and automation of CI/CD pipelines.
  • Explore and integrate new trends and technologies to improve system reliability.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in programming (C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python).
  • 1+ years experience with Linux internals—process management, file systems, networking.
  • Experience in virtualization technologies: KVM, XEN, Hyper-V, QEMU, Cloud Hypervisor.
  • Knowledge of kernel-space vs. user-space concepts and performance tuning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience.
  • Experience in Linux kernel development, device drivers, or embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with cross-compilation, Make/CMake, Yocto, and debugging tools (GDB, strace, perf).
  • Experience with hardware-software interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART, PCIe).
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and Git-based development workflow skills.
