European Research Project Unlocks the Future of Immersive Collaboration with 6G-XR

The future of immersive collaboration is rapidly becoming a reality as the European research project 6G-XR demonstrates groundbreaking progress in Extended Reality (XR) and holographic communication. Led by a consortium of leading organizations—Capgemini, Ericsson, the i2CAT Research Centre, and Vicomtech—the project validates how Beyond 5G (B5G) and future 6G networks can support highly demanding, real-time immersive services at scale.

These advancements represent a major milestone for next-generation digital collaboration, paving the way for seamless holographic communication, intelligent edge computing, and adaptive XR experiences across industries.

Real-Time Holographic Communication Without Interruptions

One of the key demonstrations, developed by Ericsson and the i2CAT Research Centre, showcased real-time holographic communication between Barcelona and Madrid using i2CAT’s HoloMIT system. This use case focused on maintaining uninterrupted holographic calls, even under challenging network conditions.

Two major innovations enabled this achievement:

  • Proactive Congestion Detection
Advanced algorithms continuously monitor network performance at the cell level, detecting congestion before it impacts holographic quality. This proactive approach ensures stable, high-fidelity communication.
  • Intelligent Traffic Prioritization (CAMARA Quality on Demand – QoD)
When congestion is detected, CAMARA QoD dynamically prioritizes holographic traffic, allocating additional network resources in real time. This significantly improves service continuity and reduces latency.

Powered by Ericsson’s 5G Standalone (5GSA) network, this demonstration highlights how application intelligence combined with network-level prioritization can deliver reliable holographic communication over long distances—crucial for sectors like remote industrial maintenance, healthcare, and advanced education.

Intelligent Edge Selection Enhances XR User Experience

The second demonstration, jointly developed by Capgemini, Vicomtech, Ericsson, and i2CAT, focused on optimizing XR services through automated edge node selection across the Barcelona–Madrid edge continuum.

This use case integrated:

  • i2CAT’s HoloMIT holographic technology
  • Vicomtech’s Remote Rendering Technology for lightweight XR devices
  • Ericsson’s adaptable end-to-end network infrastructure
  • Capgemini’s Intelligent Edge Automation Platform (IEAP)

Using the CAMARA Simple Edge Discovery API, exposed via Capgemini’s IEAP, the system automatically selected the optimal edge node based on real-time factors such as user location, latency, network load, and resource availability.

The result was a smooth, high-quality XR experience regardless of physical distance, proving that distributed XR applications can dynamically adapt using standardized APIs and intelligent orchestration.

Network Intelligence as the Foundation of 6G-Powered XR

Together, these demonstrations confirm that network intelligence, edge computing, and application-level adaptability will be foundational pillars of future XR and holographic services. Stable holographic calls during congestion and automated edge optimization illustrate how immersive collaboration can scale reliably in future 6G networks.

Industry leaders involved in the project emphasized that these innovations will fundamentally change how people communicate, collaborate, and experiment digitally—making XR more accessible, scalable, and impactful across multiple sectors.
